Ex Machina is a science fiction, psychological thriller that dicusses topics of sexuality, human nature, and the relationship between technology and humanity. This title sequence addresses how man-made technology resembles human intelligence and emotions and how this confuses their boundaries.
The treatment for the title sequence is juxtapositioning noir film style with UI elements to portray the connection of humanism and roboticism. The noir film style was used in various crime dramas to emphasize cynical attitudes and sexual motivations. The private eye and femme fatale were character types conventionally identified with noir, which is relevant to the diseptive fembot figure encapsulated in the world of a private scientist and researcher. Ex Machina is essentially the melodrama of modern science fiction.
